The HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein has its headquarters in the municipality of Irdning-Donnersbachtal in Upper Styria. There are also branches in Wels and Lambach as well as branches in Piber. In this way, a wide variety of site conditions can be covered.

  • Organic networking seminar “Organic farming in the classroom”

    Under the motto "Deepening Organic Education – Shaping and Implementing Together," this year's organic networking seminar, "Organic Farming in the Classroom," invites teachers, consultants, and researchers in organic agriculture to collaborate on the further development of organic education. The focus is on strengthening networks between schools, consultants, and academia, exchanging experiences, and learning from one another.

  • Workshop: Thermography as a tool for animal observation

    Thermal imaging cameras offer exciting possibilities for animal observation in organic pig farming. They can help detect signs of fever, inflammation, or overheating early on, thus contributing to improved animal welfare.
    They also provide valuable services for monitoring water intake, equipment, and silage storage temperature – all at manageable costs. Nevertheless, they are still not widely used in practice.

  • ONLINE seminar: Farm-related teaching with farmlife.at, February 25, 2026

    Building on their knowledge from a basic seminar on FarmLife (appointment the day before!), participants will learn to use the methodologically diverse, competency-oriented offerings of the FarmLife educational concept for interdisciplinary or subject-specific teaching, thus achieving greater practical relevance and emotional involvement of the students.

  • Open stable door in Thalheim/Wels

    The Institute for Organic Agriculture at its branch in Thalheim/Wels regularly opens its stable doors to visitors. From farmers to consultants, teachers, and other interested parties, everyone is welcome!

  • 14th Austrian Equestrian Conference 2026

    The 14th Austrian Equine Symposium will take place on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein. We will publish the detailed program and make online registration available soon.

  • Digital innovations for grassland and livestock farming

    From 2026, all farmers in Austria will have access to a new, free tool: the SatGrass App Gumpenstein. It enables satellite-based grassland management directly on a smartphone – simple, practical, and highly precise. From determining the optimal cutting time to the sustainable use of resources, the app provides valuable decision-making support for everyday farm life. 

  • 53rd Livestock Farming Conference 2026

    The annual livestock farming HBLFA on March 25th and 26th, 2025. In addition to current topics in livestock farming, milk management, grassland adaptation to climate change, and cattle fattening, the breeding and quality of silage maize will also be discussed and presented.

  • Graduation ceremony 2026

    The graduation ceremony - a formal send-off for our graduating students - will take place on June 19, 2026.

Raumberg-Gumpenstein Higher Federal Teaching and Research Institute for Agriculture

The HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein unites research and teaching under one roof and is the largest department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Climate and Environmental Protection, Regions and Water Management. Austrian agriculture relies on a comprehensive quality strategy. The HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein supports this approach through research, education, consulting, and teaching.

Research and teach in tune with the times

the teaching and training includes a boarding school, both a conventional and an organic teaching and research farm with its own livestock, a teaching forest, various practice rooms and workshops, and a processing center for meat, milk and fruit , a chemistry and a biology laboratory as well as a teaching biotope are available. The close intersection of teaching and research is important to us. “Science in School” and modern methods of imparting knowledge through motivated teachers characterize the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein.
