Animal husbandry systems, technology and emissions

High emissions and the resulting immissions regularly lead to conflicts with neighbors and present Austrian livestock farming with the challenge of developing environmentally friendly and at the same time animal welfare-friendly husbandry systems.

     HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein/SaLuT project

The EIP project SaLuT aims to reduce ammonia (NH 3 ) and odor emissions in fattening pig farming. The focus is on the development and testing of the first low-emission animal welfare stable for fattening pigs in Austria, with completely new technical approaches being taken in the areas of animal husbandry and emissions.

    Focal points

The following priorities are set in the project with partners from the EIP-AGRI rail:

    • Reduction of ammonia, dust and odor pollution in animal production and development of quantifiable statements on the emission reduction potential
    • Improving animal welfare in pig farms
    • Solving existing or avoiding future conflicts of interest with residents and animal rights activists
    • Medium to long-term security of domestic pork supply in Austria

    Outlook and potential

The project will develop scientifically based statements on the emission saving potential of best practice examples in the area of pig fattening. Furthermore, practical implementation options for the NEC directive in the area of animal production are presented. Recommendations for appropriate funding measures are intended to support the widespread implementation of the new technology and create investment incentives.

By actively involving those involved in the pig fattening sector, the production systems developed are optimized and positioned as a gentle alternative. The approaches to improving animal husbandry and quantifying emissions reductions are intended to help avoid future conflicts of interest with animal rights activists and residents. Ultimately, the innovations that are necessary for the continued existence and further development of domestic, small-scale pig production are highlighted.
