Greening in the vineyard - Life VineAdapt

Project goal: Sustainable viticulture to adapt to climate change

On Friday, September 9, 2022, the Gumpenstein project team of the LIFE project VineAdapt took part 23rd LIFE platform in Krems an der Donau . After the presentation of the project principles and project work packages Innovative tramway greening to increase biodiversity and vegetation management in the understory area - alternatives to glyphosate by Dr. Graiss Wilhelm there was a lively exchange about the locations, choice of species and care measures for such greenery.

The stay in Lower Austria was combined with consulting work at the Wachau Domain . mixtures selected by the HBLFA (grasses, grass-herbs and species-rich mixture) and three low-growing species were selected there and on cooperating wineries with a view to “ecological weed control sown. Almost six months later, the areas show varying levels of establishment of the species; in some locations the competition from weeds is very high and in others the fine-grained seeds were partially washed away due to extensive irrigation. Autumn sowing of the same species will soon be carried out at three locations in order to determine whether this shows more assertiveness than spring sowing due to the improved water supply through morning dew and lower temperatures.
