Creation and maintenance of permanent greenery in fruit and wine growing

From a management point of view, permanent greenery in the lanes should be viewed like intensively managed grassland areas. Through a know-how transfer from the grassland sector, combined with the development of specific seed mixtures and greening strategies, a significant improvement or problem solution can be achieved in wine-growing areas in southern and eastern Styria and all fruit-growing areas with permanently green lanes.

The research project aims to establish existing grassland technology in viticulture and fruit growing and to develop new strategies for the composition, establishment and maintenance of permanent greenery.
The following research projects are to be implemented in suitable areas of the Silberberg Wine and Fruit Growing Center over the next few years:

    • Development and use of new greening mixtures
    • Renovation/improvement of existing greenery using reseeding
    • New system with split mixtures
    • Subsequent establishment of split mixtures
    • Use of alternative cover crops
