Research up close – Science Week in Raumberg

Research up close – Science Week in Raumberg

For the 3rd grades of HLBLA St. Florian, “Science Week” was an impressive end to the school year – science and research up close.

From May 30th From June 3rd, 2022, the two 3rd year students from the St. Florian Federal Agricultural College spent three days each at the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein. The aim of the stay at the Styrian teaching and research institute was to get the students excited about research and scientific work and thus lay a good foundation for writing their diploma theses.

The diploma theses, which have to be written as a team, represent an important part of the maturity and diploma examination. The students in this year's 3rd year will start choosing topics for their diploma theses in the coming school year. In order to be well prepared for this, they were allowed to get a taste of scientific work for a few days at the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein, learned about the criteria for the meaningful design of experiments and learned a lot about the procedure for evaluating experiments - science and research up close.

The students worked on the following topics in four groups and were expertly guided by HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein employees:

    • Rating, yield and fertilizer requirement determination of grassland areas (supervised by Ing. Reinhard Resch / Institute for Plant Production and Cultural Landscape)
    • Surveys on feed intake and nutrient supply of sheep by Dipl.-Ing. Stefanie Gappmaier / Institute for Livestock Research)
    • Focus stable climate - technical measurement and assessment options in practice (supervised by BE Ing. in Irene Mösenbacher-Molterer / Institute for Animals, Technology and Environment)
    • Grazing behavior (eating - ruminating) of dairy cows in different pasture systems (supervised by DI in Edina Scherzer / Institute for Organic Agriculture and Livestock Biodiversity)

The crowning conclusion of Science Week were presentations in which the students presented the results of their “research” in an impressive way.

Everyone was enthusiastic about the organization and course of Science Week, which would not have been possible without the great commitment of everyone involved. A special thank you goes to the employees of the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein research institutes, who made Science Week a unique experience for the students of HLBLA St. Florian.
