ORGANIC agriculture is growing

The figures for 2020 on organic farms and organic areas are available.

Organic areas and organic farms are increasing.

    Organic development in numbers

As of 2020, there are 24,480 organic farms in Austria, which is 225 more than in 2019, which corresponds to a share of almost 23% of the businesses.

In 2020, more than a quarter of the agriculturally used area in Austria was already cultivated organically, a total of around 680,000 hectares, over 10,800 hectares or 1.6% more than in 2019.

The proportions of organic animals according to the different animal species show large differences. The organic share of goats and ducks is already over 50%. While the average proportion of all cattle is organic at 22%, over 40% of suckler cows are on organic farms.

The proportion of sheep is 30% organic, and 3.1% of the pigs are on organic farms. In general, the organic share of poultry has increased enormously in recent years. Over a quarter of the broiler chickens in Austria are fattened on organic farms, and the figure for geese is over 30%.

    Organic research supported

The results of our research support these developments. We work on strategies and management practices that promote soil fertility, biodiversity, health, regionality and quality.

Through innovations, we contribute to sustainable agricultural development in the ecological, economic and social areas. Further information on the research and implementation activities at the Bio-Institut can be found via the following link: Bio-Institut – goals and tasks
