In addition to the pig research barn, the Institute for Animals, Technology and the Environment operates a barn for studying gaseous emissions (ammonia, methane, nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide and odor) from poultry farming.

The Institute for Animals, Technology & Environment deals with emissions and immissions that arise in livestock farming and can lead to conflicts at the interface between agriculture and neighbors or the environment. The focus is on smell, ammonia, dust, bioaerosols and noise.

The Animal Husbandry Systems, Technology and Emissions Department is a testing center in accordance with Section 8 Paragraph 1 of the Specialist Center/Husody Systems Ordinance (FstHVO) for stable facilities in the livestock sector and is specialized in the testing of air conditioning solutions in the Testing and Test Analysis Department in collaboration with the Specialist Center for Animal-Friendly Animal Husbandry and Animal Welfare specialized.

New technologies are tested in close coordination on practical farms or in the research stables of the Higher Federal Teaching and Research Institute Raumberg-Gumpenstein, where, if the assessment is positive, the company's goal is to award new technical equipment for animal husbandry that has been brought onto the market from 2012 onwards can be seen on the Austrian animal protection license plate.

In view of the relevance and legal obligation to give preference to tested products in the livestock sector, companies operating in the Austrian market are required to contact the specialist office or the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein in order to have their climate solutions subjected to a thorough, neutral test to undergo.

The pig research stable in Raumberg-Gumpenstein is the only fattening stable in Austria and one of the few stables in Europe in which gaseous emissions, dust and odor can be measured and emission factors can subsequently be derived for various questions.

There are a variety of additives for liquid manure - either already used in feeding (feed additive), or sprinkled on the walkways and/or lying areas, or stirred directly into the manure storage. The objectives for this are always very similar - with manure it is essentially about reducing odor and ammonia emissions.

A comprehensive learning platform has been continuously developed for our farm management tool FarmLife since 2017. The materials available for this are all made available on the learning platform of the University of Agricultural and Environmental Education as a “Life Cycle Assessment Course” (with login). They were basically developed for teaching at LFS and HBLA, but are also partly suitable for AHS (from the 9th grade) or for relevant courses at technical colleges and universities.
