Review of the 11th Austrian Horse Conference

The largest Austrian educational event in the horse sector was held on Saturday, March 4th, 2023 in the Puttererseehalle in Aigen im Ennstal. After the difficulties of the Corona years, the organizing committee around Dr. Birgit Heidinger and Ing. Irene Mösenbacher-Molterer ( HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein) were positively encouraged due to increasing visitor numbers. 340 participants from Austria and Germany were welcomed in a hybrid form thanks to current and explosive topic areas.

The start took place in the form of a moving lecture on ethical considerations and questions as well as a high-level panel discussion on this topic with representatives from sports, breeding and veterinary medicine. Safety as well as legal and animal welfare-related aspects in road traffic through to the training of driving horses formed the second conference block. The presentation of Austrian breeds is a beautiful tradition, with this year, in addition to the Austrian riding pony, newly introduced breeds such as the Austrian pony and the Austrian partbred pony were also presented. Extensive discussions and answers to relevant questions accompanied the entry and mandatory reporting of the stay of equines in the VIS database and led to a large veterinary block covering topics such as the influence of heat on the horse, the detection of lameness and its physiotherapeutic treatment options included interesting insights into complementary medical methods and rounded off the day of the event in an informative manner.

The Austrian Equine Conference with an accompanying specialist exhibition is distinguished every year by practical and scientifically based contributions. In addition to the high level of interest shown by the participants, the award is also rewarded by further training recognition from the Austrian Equestrian Sports Association, the Austrian Animal Health Service as well as agricultural and forestry teaching and advice.

This successful specialist event will be continued in cooperation with all Austrian horse-related institutions in spring 2024.

Review of the 10th Austrian Horse Conference

(March 5, 2022, Puttererseehalle Aigen iE)

An anniversary of a slightly different kind - this is how the equine conference took place for the first time in a hybrid form with the option to participate online and on site.

Numerous guests from home and abroad, including many regular guests from previous years, gathered at the Puttererseehalle in Aigen im Ennstal on Saturday, March 5th, 2022, to hear top-class speakers and a varied program after a year of Corona-related break enjoy. The focus was on the horse as a unifying element across all Austrian, horse-related institutions. Despite the officially ordered Covid prevention concept and the reduced number of participants on site, the organizational team managed to create the best conditions for all those present and participants via the web with the usual quality in order to promote shared exchange, strengthening networks and personal connections “all around horses”. .

    Looking back on 10 years

After a film review of 10 years of equine conferences, well-known representatives from home and abroad spoke and discussed questions of training with clear wishes such as a common professional profile for riding apprenticeships and a comprehensive further development of the current training with the inclusion of the Austrian Equestrian Association and the specialist vocational schools. Further defined goals are the promotion of high-quality training at riding schools and legal protection for this professional sector.

The new horse identification regulation and warranty law turned out to be controversial issues. The fact that horses from May 1, 2022 and with a usual period of stay of more than 30 days at the respective location, with exceptions of up to 90 days for sport, training and breeding, are subject to a reporting obligation subject to the VIS database gave rise to discussion. Since the implementation is an ongoing process, not all questions could be clarified, but the Ministry of Health is available as a contact person.

In addition to a presentation of the Austrian Warmblood Horse, the presentation of an economic efficiency study by the Working Group of Austrian Horse Breeders and insights into the transformation of the Spanish Riding School from a prestigious object to a modern cultural enterprise, short presentations discussed the requirements for horses for breeding, for sport as well as for performance/disposition and Compatibility tests are presented.

The specialist day was rounded off with topics on horse health with lectures from the VetMedUni Vienna as well as a series start with current cases from equine veterinary practice.

    outlook

A total of around 300 visitors showed that, despite all the restrictions, this anniversary was very positive for the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein and its Austria-wide co-organizers and partners, although the main wish is to have an Austrian horse conference in the usual form again in 2023 without Access restrictions and with unlimited numbers of participants.

Review of the 9th Austrian Horse Conference 2020

    Horse conference 2020 01 small

The Austrian horse conference “Around the Horse” took place for the ninth time on March 7, 2020 in the Puttererseehalle in Aigen im Ennstal (Stemk.). The event enjoys growth from year to year and this year 450 guests from Austria, Germany, Slovenia and Liechtenstein were welcomed.

The conference was opened by the Direktor of the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein, Dr. Anton Hausleitner, the mayor of the market town of Irdning-Donnersbachtal Herbert Gugganig and top-class representatives from horse breeding and sport: Dr. Günther Forenbacher (OEPS), Paul Kendlbacher (Die Rändlichen Österreich) and Willy Feuerle (ZAP).

    1. Thematic block

“Training young horses” – that was the title of the first lecture block, in which, with the involvement of top-class speakers, the range was covered from basic training and the first steps in dressage work, to versatility, driving and western riding.

The cooperation between the cooperation partners makes it possible to present excellent lectures every year: for the first part, the head of the Heldenberg training center, Mr. Florian Zimmermann (Spanish Riding School), was able to invite the only 21-year-old eventing rider Lea Siegl from Hargelsberg, who was due to her excellent performance last year. This season, an Olympic starting place in Tokyo has been secured for Austria, Mr. Franz Feichtinger, driving training manager at the Stadl-Paura horse center, and the western professional Christan Mantler from Wolfern will be won. Brief insights into the training of the young show jumper were presented through experienced statements from Herbert Gugganig and Andreas Pallisch, long-time practitioners and trainers, after the presentation had originally been removed from the daily schedule due to a short-term cancellation.

After the lunch break, a historical development in the history of Austrian horse breeding was presented: Mag. Wilhelm Popatnig spoke about the creation of the new general secretariat based in the Upper Austrian horse center Stadl Paura, at which point the organizational team expressed their best wishes for this responsible activity .

As a continuation of the breed presentations that began last year, this year the aim was to bring the Haflinger horse impressively closer to the audience - the speakers for this were the chairman of the ARGE Haflinger, Mr. Manfred Lientschnig, and the managing director of the Fohlenhof Ebbs, Mr. Robert Mair. As an annual highlight, all Haflinger fans can note the date for the world exhibition from May 21st - 24th, 2020 in Ebbs with 700 participating horses.

    2. Thematic block

In the second topic block, the feeding of young horses was examined: From the perspective of the veterinary doctor with regard to an ideal and needs-based diet or the disease-causing consequences of possible over- or under-feeding as well as suboptimal feeding techniques by Dr. Sonja Berger from the VetMedUni Vienna to practical ration design (DI Na tasch a Stolka, Garant Tierfutter), was supported by Univ.-Prof. Remigius Chizzola (VetMedUni Vienna) made a further essential contribution to toxic substances and toxins in basic feed and concentrated feed, according to which the main criterion lies primarily in the knowledge of poisonous plants, the visual inspection of pastures and feedstuffs and, in case of doubt, the immediate involvement of a specialist.

    Presentation hay project

The hay project was presented as a novelty by Ing. Reinhard Resch ( HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein) - If it is already common practice in the cattle sector, in the future the basic feed for horses will also be subjected to extensive testing in collaboration with the Rosenau feed laboratory. After explaining and evaluating all samples submitted from the 2018 and 2019 harvest years, the winners were awarded - among other things, the first prize for the best quality from the 2019 crop went to Ms. Barbara Schneider from Strengberg (Lower Austria). In recognition, certificates and non-cash prizes were awarded to all prize winners from the Rosenau feed laboratory, Die Saat and Fixkraft Futtermittel.

Ing. Irene Mösenbacher-Molterer from the organization team ended the conference extremely satisfied with the best thanks to all speakers, guests, exhibitors and sponsors and referred to the anniversary event “10 Years of Horses” taking place in 2021, which is a fixed date for the Austrian event Horse scene can be seen.
