As part of the LIFEstockProtect project, companies are selected from the participating countries (Bavaria, Austria, South Tyrol, Trentino) which, as herd protection competence centers, impart their knowledge about herd protection to other interested farmers in courses lasting several days.
LIFEstockProtect aims to disseminate comprehensive knowledge to farmers about protecting their herds and is a project co-financed by the EU. For more information, visit www.lifestockprotect.info . The HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein is working here together with the Austrian Center Bear, Wolf, Lynx, which is a partner in the project.
The background is the return of large predators, which presents livestock farmers with new challenges. Pasture farming, as we have traditionally practiced it for more than 100 years, is no longer possible in this form. It is no longer important to fence the animals in to prevent them from escaping, but rather to protect the animals from a break-in by a large predator. We are aware that not all areas can be protected with a herd protection fence. For example, in many alpine pastures the effort required to erect and daily check a livestock protection fence is too high. If fences are built on alpine pastures, it should be borne in mind that not only are large predators locked out, but also other wild animals.
Recent years have also shown that around 40 percent of cracks on home pastures occur close to the farm. These areas are usually already fenced in, some with electricity, but not yet completely burglar-proof. Conversely, only a few adjustments need to be made to ensure protection for our grazing animals.
Herd protection competence centers are being set up for interested farmers as part of LIFEstockProtect, which also includes the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein. These are mainly interested companies that offer courses with the support of LIFEstockProtect in the practical implementation of herd protection. Various livestock protection fences are currently being erected for demonstration purposes in an exhibition area directly at the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein. These fences meet the standard of technical herd protection in Austria and can be viewed by visitors to the HBLFA .
