Show me your feet – professional hoof care for cattle

Claw diseases play a major role in everyday cattle life. Many factors are important for claw health: feeding and metabolism, for example, have a significant influence on the formation of healthy horn. The husbandry system and the resulting external influences also affect the claws. Regular and professionally correct hoof care is essential to prevent, detect and treat pathological changes. This means the health and well-being of cattle is supported in the best possible way.

In order to be able to assess the main factors influencing claw health, assess the condition of claws and, if necessary, take countermeasures, you need professionally sound training. Building on the LFI’s “basic hoof care” certificate course, which was completed in spring 2020, nine graduates successfully completed the “intercompany hoof care advanced course” certificate course consisting of 80 teaching units at the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein at the end of July 2020. Once again, congratulations to the graduates!

The advanced course took place under the technical supervision and support of Robert Pesenhofer and the Association of Austrian Hoof Trimmers in cooperation with the LFI Steiermark and the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein. Lecturers from the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna, the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein, specialist speakers from the SVB, freelance trainers and experienced hoof care instructors looked after the participants during their training.

On October 1, 2020, a new training opportunity at the next level will start with the first “Diploma course for instructors in functional claw care” at the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein. Experienced hoof trimmers who have successfully completed both certificate courses will be trained as instructors as part of this course and will therefore be able to teach at LFI courses and similar training courses themselves in the future. The focus of this course is on conveying and passing on hoof care knowledge, both in theory and in practice. Robert Pesenhofer is the technical director of the instructor course, the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein provides some speakers and is responsible for the course organization. Lecturers from the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna and European Hoofcare, an international network of hoof care experts, also take part in this diploma course. The course includes 19 days of attendance and 2 weeks of practice.

The number of participants in the diploma course is limited to twelve people and is already fully booked for winter 2020/2021. It is planned to offer this course annually if there is enough demand.
