Seasonal calving in suckler cow farming

While continuous calving is common in suckler cow farming in Austria, mainly due to the small-scale farming structures of this branch of the business, blocked or seasonal calving is used in classic suckler cow countries.

Blocked, seasonal calving allows the animals' nutrient requirements to be best adapted to the quality of the feed - especially the pastures . In addition, all animals are in the same stage of lactation, which makes feeding easier and minimizes the risk of over- or under-feeding.

Through block calving, larger and more uniform batches be delivered to cattle fatteners who buy and fatten out feeders from suckler cows. If, on the other hand, young cattle are marketed directly from the farm, customers expect a continuous purchase opportunity, which in turn speaks against block calving.
