Project IBeSt_Plus “Evaluation of Austrian pig fattening stables with different husbandry systems with regard to animal welfare and economics”

The IBeSt+ project is a legally anchored/required research project that was started in November 2023. The implementation is an extension of the IBeSt . In the project expansion, 30 pig fattening farms that operate according to higher animal welfare standards or in label programs (e.g. according to the criteria of TW60/"Good" and TW100/"Very Good") are to be evaluated.

This evaluation assesses the effects on animal welfare (particularly a physically and temperature-comfortable lying area) as well as the economic, work-related and ecological effects. Special consideration is given to the ban on routine tail docking.

The data collected over two years will then be pooled and analyzed with the data from the IBeSt basic project.
The project will be completed at the end of 2026 and the findings will then be comprehensively assessed by the Department for Animal-Friendly Animal Husbandry and Animal Welfare. Building on this and also taking international developments into account, the minimum standards in fattening pig farming that will apply from January 1, 2040 will have to be defined in a political process.
