Soil, plants, animals and fertilizer form a cycle in which food is produced. In a closed cycle, exactly as many nutrients are supplied as are needed to produce the food. The high use of external inputs, which can unbalance this cycle, and the modern mechanization of agriculture can lead to environmental impacts that affect our livelihoods, soil, water and air. The eco-efficiency research group uses the management tool “FarmLife” to evaluate these environmental impacts at the farm level in order to be able to compare individual farms with regard to their environmental compatibility of management.
