Focus on Austrian mountain dairy farms

The management of green spaces in mountain regions is invaluable. Ultimately, it also ensures the care and preservation of our cultural landscape by the mountain farmers of Austrian mountain dairy farms. However, small-scale mountain dairy farming faces significant challenges. For example, required conversions of year-round free-stall or outdoor housing systems are causing uncertainty.

Last year, the EIP project "Mountain Dairy Cattle" was launched at the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein. This project focuses on documenting and evaluating structural solutions for the required conversion measures on dairy farms in extreme mountain locations in Austria. Currently, staff at the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein are assessing the animal welfare and emission risk potential on these farms. The results will then be analyzed.

Since adapting dairy barns, especially in mountainous regions, presents many challenges, the solutions developed by the participating farms are being collected and made available for consultation. Some of the approximately 30 mountain farmers involved in this project have already converted their barns; the remaining conversions will be carried out over the course of the project.
