Austrian mountain dairy farms in focus

The management of green spaces in mountainous regions is invaluable. Ultimately, this is also a guarantee of the care and preservation of our cultural landscape by the mountain farmers of the Austrian mountain dairy farms. However, small-scale mountain dairy farming faces major challenges. For example, required conversion measures to year-round freestall or exercise stable systems cause uncertainty.

The EIP project “Mountain Dairy Cattle” started at the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein last year. This involves the documentation and evaluation of structural solutions for the required conversion measures on dairy farms in extreme mountain locations in Austria. Employees at the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein are currently working on assessing the animal welfare and emissions risk potential on the farms. These results are then evaluated.

Since the adaptation of the dairy barn brings with it many challenges, especially in mountain areas, the solution approaches from the project companies are collected and made available for consultation. Some of the approximately 30 mountain farmers who are taking part in this project have already converted their stables; the remaining conversions will take place over the course of the project.
