Added value of mountain agriculture - highlights 2023

On Monday, November 13th, 2023, this year's highlight in the two-year Added Value Mountain Agriculture project took place with the feedback of the operating results and the awarding of the FarmLife farm plaque. 22 of the 29 participating companies took time on this rainy day to reap the rewards of their participation in the project at the sustainability factory in Steinbach/Steyr.

For a year now, we have been actively working on developing individual farm indicators to describe the ecosystem services of mountain agriculture. After the data was entered by the farmers in March/April, the calculation of eco-efficiency could be started using the FarmLife tool. This forms the basis for the majority of the supplying and regulating services in mountain agriculture. To assess cultural ecosystem services and biodiversity, company visits took place in August/September, during which a survey and a biodiversity assessment were carried out.

In addition to the individual company feedback, two expert consultations also took place in November to discuss the individual company indicators with other researchers from Austria who deal with ecosystem services. The feedback from the experts and farmers is incorporated into the evaluation scheme for ecosystem services. Next year there will also be a feedback workshop and the baton will be handed over to the FH Steyr, which is working on the implementation as a business model.
