Innovative alpine pasture management through targeted grazing with sheep – second alpine summer

On May 30, 2009, 715 sheep and lambs were raised on the Hauser Kaibling as part of a leader project by the Styrian Sheep Breeding Association. Already in the summer of 2008, as part of this project, in which the Styrian Sheep Breeding Association, the LFZ Raumberg-Gumpenstein, the municipality of Haus im Ennstal, the Hauser Kaibling Bergbahnen, the agricultural district authority, the tourism association and the land and sheep owners work very closely together, 738 Sheep and lambs are rounded up and guided over the slopes and alpine pastures by a professional master shepherd from Germany.

The master shepherd has also trained a very interested and committed Styrian in herding sheep and looking after the animals, so that this year he and his partner are already looking after the flock of sheep independently, of course with his dogs.

The herd will again be scientifically monitored by the LFZ, and all animal and plant-relevant data will be collected in accordance with the Agram research project. In addition, this year the herd was equipped with 2 satellite receivers to track the exact path of grazing.
