Crash course for shepherds on sheep and goat pastures

The second part of the crash course for shepherds on sheep and goat pastures took place on May 8th and 9th. This time the participants learned important basics about herd management, herd protection and pasture management:

How does sectoral shepherding differ from compact shepherding? How can I control a large herd and protect it from large predators ? How can I estimate feed availability ?

During the practical part the following day, Reinhard Huber explained important aspects of fence construction :

  • function of the electrical circuit,
  • proper grounding,
  • fences in difficult terrain,
  • herd protection fence,
  • Fault detection in the electrical circuit.

In small groups, fixed fences and pens set up, strands were pulled and driveways were built. During the introduction to working with herding dogs in the afternoon, Johannes Weber (chairman of the Austrian herding dog association ASDS) demonstrated the use of border collies in herding work.

The four-day crash course offered a first insight into working as a sheep and goatherd and was rated very positively by the participants.
