By biological diversity we mean one
- large number of habitats and ecosystems,
- of the species living there and
- the genetic diversity within species.
According to Dr. Helmut Gaugitsch from the Federal Environment Agency is bad on these three levels globally, EU-wide and also in Austria , the diversity of habitats and species is declining and a large part of the protected assets is in an unfavorable state of conservation. Depending on the different management practices, land management can have a positive, neutral or negative influence . In the interests of sustainability, our agriculture requires intact biological diversity as an important basis for life and production.
What can every farmer and every individual in society do to maintain or improve the state of biological diversity? Measures negotiated jointly and through dialogue will be useful and necessary in the implementation of the EU Restoration Regulation , including through the creation of national restoration plans Biological diversity and agriculture should not be a contradiction, but rather a common concern for ensuring sustainable food systems in the environment.
