Berkshire - the “Kobe beef” among pigs

In Austria, the Berkshire pig breed, which is considered the oldest breed in Great Britain, is relatively unknown. The name is derived from the county of Berkshire, which lies west of London in southern England.

The bend in the trunk is immediately noticeable; the animals are also smaller than our native white breeds. The meat is considered particularly delicate because it has a high degree of marbling (veins of fat in the meat). Some even claim that Berkshires are the Kobe cattle of pigs. At the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein there are frozen semen from the Berkshire boars Randy (photo) and Richie. Offspring from a mating with white pigs are expected in the next few weeks.
