A safety net for pig breeding

Using frozen boar semen to protect against losses due to disease or natural disasters. This genetic backup for pig breeding in Upper Austria is a collaboration between the Austrian Livestock Gene Bank and the Upper Austrian Pig Breeders' Association.

Breeding animals represent the genetic future. The semen from the top boars at the Steinhaus insemination station near Wels is rigorously tested – now also for its suitability for freezing. With semen that can be stored indefinitely, losses – for example, due to disease outbreaks – can be replaced at any time.
