But stable furnishing companies are also offered advisory support in the development of husbandry systems. Therefore, as part of a large-scale modular project in collaboration between the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein, the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna and the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna, the most important farrowing systems offered by companies in Austria are to be examined with regard to animal welfare and animal health, economic efficiency and legal compliance.
The aim of this subproject (work package 1) is to check 10 different types of farrowing crates for legal compliance and to generate information about the material properties, durability and ease of use of these housing systems. This provides farmers who are about to invest in the farrowing sector with important basic information.
The investigations are carried out in the research and educational stable for pig farming Gießhübl GmbH, which houses a total of 600 sows and has 103 farrowing places. An actual situation analysis is carried out and defects are continuously documented throughout the entire project period.
