Milk production and animal nutrition

The employees of this department deal with research questions on current topics in ruminant feeding and milk production. The questions addressed arise from practical problems as well as political and social requirements.

Our tasks are the experimental treatment of all questions of milk production and animal nutrition in the areas of nutrient requirements (physiology), environmental impact (ecology) and economic viability (economy).

  • Nutrient and mineral requirements of agricultural animals
  • Digestive physiology, feeding and animal health
  • Ration design suitable for ruminants
  • Nutrient cycles and nutrient balances
  • Feeding and product quality

Current research focuses are:

  • Influence of genotype and feeding on efficiency in milk production
  • Emissions from cattle farming and ways to reduce them
  • Adaptation to climate change: Investigation of alternative feedstuffs to secure the feed base in dry regions or years
  • Testing the feed value of basic and concentrated feed
  • Ration design suitable for ruminants and options for ration control
  • Rearing concepts for calves and young cattle
