In their diploma thesis, the high school graduates are dealing with the topic: “Resistance to natural hazards using the example of two communities in Styria (Deutschlandsberg) and Lower Austria (Perschling).” In their work, they are supported by external partners such as the torrent and avalanche control department, the mayors in their home communities, representatives of wastewater associations and experts in geology and protective water management. The students were personally invited by the organizer Natalie Prüggler and were able to actively participate in the discussions on the topics of prevention measures - precaution and awareness.
Many students and their businesses are affected by natural hazards and the topic is also communicated in class. Natural hazard prevention is just as important for agriculture and forestry as it is for residential areas and poses greater challenges for practitioners and decision-makers, especially due to climate change.
Statements from the high school graduates
We particularly liked that the experts got to the heart of the topics quickly and in a practical manner. The topic of precaution and the questions asked were very future-oriented and are well suited for our diploma thesis. For example, the question: “What would be different if one of these natural disasters happened today?”
It was also very helpful to get to know the mayors and representatives of the KLAR! regions from the communities affected in different ways by natural hazards and to ask them about what was happening and how to deal with and protect against natural disasters. The break-out sessions between the lectures were particularly informative.

The following topics were of interest in relation to our diploma thesis:
