School classes from all over Austria took part, whose tasks were to create flowering areas, carry out a site analysis and observe pollinators who visited the flowering plants. The 2L class also took part with the support of their biology teacher Mag. Verena Mayer. The students were particularly excited about the fact that they could do research at home. This meant that they had a meaningful and exciting activity to pursue even during the numerous lockdowns. In total, the class entered data from 36 site surveys and 40 pollinator observations. Honey bees and bumblebees in particular, but also various species of wild bees, were often found in the flowering areas.
The prize for the great achievement was a check for 750 euros for the class fund, which was happily presented together with Direktor Dr. Johann Gasteiner and technical director DI Othmar Breitenbaumer were accepted. The last biology lesson before the Christmas holidays was celebrated with a great party package that the Center for Young Science, which organizes the Citizen Science Award annually, sent to the class.
We wish the 2L class a lot of joy with their win and hope that they can go on an exciting trip soon.
