Moors and peat soils play an important role in mitigating climate change , for biodiversity and flood protection . However, the majority of the moors in Austria have been drained and the extent and condition of the remaining peat soils is unknown.

In the fromBiodiversity Fund funded project MOIST ,under the Project management AGES, Peat soils should be recorded throughout Austria and assessed with regard to their suitability for regeneration. To describe the degradation of peat soils and their vegetation, the project team met at the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein on June 20th and 21st, 2024 to exchange views on the main areas of work. Under the leadership of Andreas Bohner, grassland locations and moors in the Ennstal and Salzkammergut were examined and the further procedure regarding designation criteria was discussed.
