Under the leadership of the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein, the EU project ALPEROS (FAIR CT98-4024) was started in 1999 with the participation of research groups and companies from Austria, Italy, Germany and Switzerland. A network of 8 test areas was established throughout the Alpine region.

As part of statistically precise plot tests, the current state of the art in high-altitude greening was evaluated in comparison to high-quality application techniques and site-appropriate seed mixtures. In the first year, sufficient erosion protection could only be achieved if the topsoil was sufficiently covered with mulching material. The choice of seed mixture was not important for erosion during this period. The use of cover crops did not provide significant benefits at high elevations. In a comparison of all test areas, the level of vegetation cover achieved only offered sufficient erosion protection when using site-appropriate seed mixtures and proved to be significantly better than that of the standard mixture used. Yield and energy concentration of site-appropriate green ski slopes were comparable to values ​​of alpine pastures. As a rule, a single application of fertilizer before sowing was sufficient to achieve a stable vegetation cover. Maintenance through mowing or grazing was also not necessary.
