The Soil-Water-Root Showcase is a station in the Soil-Water-Plant show area where the soil, the basis of life, is presented with all its functions.

For site-appropriate grassland management, the ability to address the soil and precise knowledge of the behavior of water and roots in the soil are necessary. The SOIL-WATER-ROOT sub-areas are clearly presented with their functions in the display cellar and can be explored there together with experts and teachers.

    Floor

Soil is the basis of life and therefore the most important production factor in agriculture. Precise knowledge of soil types is required for site-adapted grassland management. Their characteristics and properties determine soil fertility.

In the show cellar, two soil types typical of the Styrian Ennstal (Rendzina, brown earth) can be viewed as a soil profile.

    Water

Soil and water are among the most important natural resources and they are closely linked to each other through soil water. Soil water dissolves nutrients in the soil, controls microbial activity and thereby influences soil quality and fertility.

In the display cellar, the path of water from precipitation to groundwater is illustrated and measurement technology and data are shown.

    root

Roots are an integral part of the soil. They primarily serve to absorb water and the substances dissolved in it and to attach the plants to their location.

In the display cellar you can view root profiles of arable crops and grassland mixtures and explore their properties and functions.
