“FarmLife” business management tool for the ecological assessment of agricultural businesses

The “Eco-Efficiency of Agricultural Operations” research group at the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein, in cooperation with the Agroscope research institute (Switzerland), has developed a comprehensive farm management tool called FarmLife for Austrian agriculture. This tool evaluates environmentally relevant processes on farms and, in addition to the ecological analysis, also offers an economic analysis of the operational management areas as well as recommendations for the companies based on this.

The aspects examined include, among many others

  • the space, building and machine requirements,
  • the self-sufficiency of the companies,
  • the production efficiency in milk production,
  • the energy and CO 2 balance,
  • the ecotoxicity,
  • nitrogen eutrophication or also
  • the number of people served by the company

FarmLife has been used successfully in agricultural practice for years and shows, for example, that Austrian dairy farms have comparatively low environmental impacts in a European context.

educational concept based on this farm management tool was also developed for the young generation for use at agricultural schools. Regular training courses for teachers, supervised by Mag. a Elisabeth Finotti as a research assistant in the Department of Economics and Resource Management and a member of the eco-efficiency research group at the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein, promote the integration of this knowledge into teaching.

The FarmLife learning platform and further information can be found at www.farmlife.at and at https://raumberg-gumpenstein.at/farmlife .
