Professional aspects
In the course of his professional work, Ferdinand Ringdorfer, equipped with a wealth of skills, was able to significantly develop various areas of work in his department. He was the master builder of his department and an important co-organizer of Austrian sheep and goat breeding. But first and foremost he was a scientist and successfully disseminated his findings among the target groups. This includes farmers in Austria as well as schoolchildren and students from all over Europe. The technical highlights include research into meat production with lambs. The fact that lamb has become a sought-after and valued product again over the last twenty years is also part of its success. He has made particular contributions to questions relating to the feeding and breeding of fattening lambs and mother animals. Because the keeping of sheep and goats in Austria is also crucially linked to alpine farming, a whole series of projects have also been implemented here. At the national level, a comprehensive model example of alpine farming was created with the recultivation project on Hauser Kaibling; at the international level, this approach was carried into neighboring European countries (EU projects Alpinet Gheep and Life Wolf Alps). At this level, Dr. Ringdorfer also served as vice-president in the relevant commission of the European Association for Animal Production (EAAP) for 8 years.
“Sheep currently”
His wide recognition in the community is due to Dr. Ringdorfer probably thanks to his twenty years of editorial work in the magazine “Schafe aktuell” and the successful publication of specialist books. Under his leadership, a total of 20 specialist conferences for sheep and goat farmers were held at the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein. The resulting conference proceedings demonstrate and document the wealth of developments that occurred during Dr. Ringdorfer had to be overcome.
