Plant species diversity depends on many factors

Plant species diversity is an important assessment criterion for nature conservation. A high diversity of plant species is an indication of the high nature conservation value of a grassland area. Plant species diversity is also a measure of the ecological sustainability of grassland management. Site-appropriate management contributes to maintaining or increasing plant species diversity.

Plant species diversity depends on many factors.

    This includes:

    • regional species pool
    • Stress and disruption at the site (intensity of current and former use)
    • Site heterogeneity
    • Nutrient availability in the soil
    • Productivity (aboveground phytomass production)
    • Growth habit of the dominant species
