Net food production and relative land use of livestock farming in Austria

The contribution of animal husbandry to human food security is highly controversial due to the high conversion losses of plant-based feed into animal products. If feed rations for livestock consist of components that can also be used directly as food (e.g., grains or legumes), then an unfavorable net food production must be expected – more potential food is fed to the animals than is produced by them.
