Net food production and relative land use of livestock farming in Austria

The contribution of animal husbandry to human food security is discussed very controversially due to the high conversion losses of plant-based feed into animal products. If feed rations for farm animals consist of components that can also serve directly as food (e.g. grain or legumes), then an unfavorable net food production must be expected - more potential food is fed than is produced by the animals.
