International students at the Bio-Institut

At the beginning of May, international students from Canada, France, Germany and Austria from the European Master in Organic Agriculture and Food Systems visited the Organic Institute in Trautenfels.

The University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna is part of this master's program along with four other European universities. The students attend the course “Case studies in organic grassland management” at BOKU in Vienna, which is led by university lecturer Walter Starz. As part of the seminar, students are taught content about organic grassland use in Central Europe, with the focus on graduated grassland use and grazing.

In order to convey the content in a clear, practical manner, over the two days the students have the opportunity to get to know pasture use and the management of meadows used at different levels of intensity at the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein's organic grassland farm. Equipped with this practical knowledge, the students create a seminar paper in which they work on a practical grassland operation with regard to optimizing the distribution of manure, the implementation of graduated grassland use and the planning of a pasture concept.
