High-tech on the pasture – sheep farming with GPS

Alpine farming is very important in Styria. Around 15,000 cattle and 10,000 sheep are kept in Upper Styria alone. In order to make the work of farmers easier and to improve the safety of animals, digitalization is increasingly being used.

The ORF program “Land and People” filmed a small excerpt about this in order to bring the topic a little closer to people and to show the advantages of having the herd with GPS transmitters attached to the collars be attached, equipped. Some sheep farmers, such as Josef Schmiedhofer from Öblarn, have been working with GPS transmitters for a long time, which are made available to them by the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein. Lukas Waldauer, cattle farmer in Bad Mitterndorf, also relies on GPS transmitters to manage his alpine pastures.

The data obtained from the GPS collars not only provides great support to farmers, but also serves research for climate research projects.
