75 years of research in Raumberg-Gumpenstein

75 years of research took place at the Higher Federal Teaching and Research Institute Raumberg-Gumpenstein . Director Dr.Direktor Johann Gasteiner and institute director Dr. Andreas Steinwidder welcomed Federal Minister Norbert Totschnig as well as numerous guests of honor from science, education, consulting, politics and agricultural interest groups. The development of research in Gumpenstein was presented in an informative film and the current challenges and tasks in agriculture were particularly discussed.

75 years of research and always in tune with the times - our anniversary film

    Companion to agriculture

The research facilities in Raumberg-Gumpenstein were founded in 1947 as a federal agency. In the early years, the focus was on questions about intensifying production and the gradual mechanization of agriculture as well as increasing food supplies and increasing yields. Increasingly, questions regarding the preservation of soil and water quality, plant diversity and food quality as well as the animal welfare of husbandry systems were also being addressed. At that time, the focus was also on root research, new breeding methods for cattle as well as the assessment of basic feed quality and the testing of grassland-based feeding strategies for ruminants. As a result, important opening and modernization steps were taken.

    Research for the future

Film contribution from our 75th anniversary celebration

Today, the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein works in four research institutes and in comprehensive working groups on the important questions that concern agriculture, food production and society. The Ministry of Agriculture's largest research department is particularly characterized by its collaboration with national and international project partners. There are currently 97 research projects and 11 EU projects working on innovations for agriculture and rural areas. The technical range spans from eco-efficiency to animal welfare, from biodiversity to the preservation of the cultural landscape, from emission reduction to options for climate change adaptation and from organic agriculture and regional food supply to the security of family farms. The integration of practice, the rapid implementation of the results and the close exchange between teaching and research are intensively practiced.

Federal Minister Totschnig particularly emphasized the high quality and international recognition of the works from Raumberg-Gumpenstein. “Our HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein is a prime example of the successful combination of education and research - and has been for 75 years. Knowledge is of no use to anyone if it is not passed on. Innovative research results give our farmers new perspectives. Thorough training provides our graduates with the best conditions for a good start to their professional lives. I warmly congratulate you on your 75th anniversary and wish the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein much success in the future in its valuable work for our entire society.”

With 75 years of research, we would also like to thank everyone who has contributed to making Raumberg-Gumpenstein so well equipped today. Thanks to those responsible in the ministry for always listening, thanks for the trust of our farmers and our advisory staff. Finally, many thanks to all of our project partners and our (former) employees who made this development possible through their work and support.

We are also pleased that Ms. Hilde Unterberger from Radio Freequenns made a contribution to our celebration. It was broadcast under the title "75 Years of Raumberg-Gumpenstein" on February 10, 2023 as part of the series "In the Middle at the Edge" and you can easily listen to this good summary of our event here. Thanks to Hilde Unterberger from Radio Freequenns .
