Studies on the size of the range in dairy goat herds

Due to the good demand for goat's milk, numerous companies have specialized in the production of goat's milk in recent years. Farm sizes of up to several hundred dairy goats have developed, most of which also want to produce according to organic guidelines.

Commission Regulation (EC) 889/2008 stipulates, among other things, that goats must be allowed to run outside and that the size
must be 2.5 m² per animal. Bio Austria's production guidelines also stipulate a run size of 2.5 m². For large goat herds, this means a huge outdoor area that needs to be built. This is associated with high costs and the resulting surface water must also be disposed of. According to observations, all animals can never be found in the run at the same time and the question arises as to whether the prescribed 2.5 m² per animal makes sense in large farms.
The aim of the project is to investigate how many animals are in the range, when, for how long and under what conditions.
