As part of the scientific activity “Short grass grazing of dairy cows” two main areas were worked on:

    A) "Tactile test" at the HBLFA on the effects of short-grass grazing on crops, dairy farming and pasture management requirements
    B) Preliminary work and surveys on selected practical farms for a possible scientific project on the topic of "Low-input full grazing of dairy cows"

The following goals should be achieved in project part A):

    • Selection of suitable practical companies for corresponding preliminary studies as a basis for a subsequent research project.
    • Recording experiences and carrying out surveys on the selected farms that already practice intensive pasture farming (short-grass pasture, possibly with seasonal calving).
    • Excursion with interested farmers to Switzerland with a visit to pasture farms and discussion with the specialist colleagues involved.
    • Examination and decision to carry out a scientific project on the topic based on the preliminary study (WT)
    • Use of the knowledge gained in a possible project formulation.

The following goals should be achieved in project part B):

    • Collection of experiences on pasture management (starting pastures, pasture care, etc.).
    • Recording the effects on the plant population and animal performance (pasture growth performance, milk yield).
    • Recognizing possible difficulties when keeping short grass pastures (stepping damage, organic, fertilization, etc.) or looking for adaptation options.
    • Derivation of possible (additional) test questions for advanced scientific projects.
