Requirements for implementing a breeding value assessment for sheep

An objective meat performance test for sheep is the prerequisite for economical lamb meat production.

    Goals of the research project:

    1. Detailed evaluation of around 17,000 data sets from meat performance testing.
    2. Estimation of genetic parameters for selected characteristics relevant to breeding goals, especially in the area of fattening and slaughter performance (heritabilities and genetic correlations), whereby mountain sheep, specialized meat breeds and the Merino land breed are taken into account.
    3. Development of models for BLUP breeding value estimation for the selected traits based on the animal model.
    4. Breeding planning calculations to review the current situation and to create practical, improved breeding programs, especially with regard to fattening and slaughter performance.
    5. Comparison of the measurement methods used in self-performance testing (computed tomography and ultrasound) as a basis for efficient meat performance testing, not only for "meat breeds" but also for Tyrolean mountain sheep.
