On June 3rd and 4th, 2019, the final conference of the transnational Camaro-D project on the topic “Collaboration for sustainable land use in relation to flood and drinking water protection in the EU Danube region” took place at the Federal Ministry for Sustainability and Tourism in Vienna. Renate Mayer and Verena Mayer represented the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein, which is an important project partner. The goals of the project were to create a transnational network of public institutions and experts from nine Danube countries and 14 project partners from public administration and experts and to implement best practice management in the pilot areas.

The central topics of the project were also preventive measures, instructions for function-oriented land use, including associated instruments and a transnational exchange of experts, as well as the creation of a land use development concept for different forms of land use.

The focus of the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein is on the interaction between agriculture and flooding, drinking water protection and nature conservation. Pilot actions were carried out here and transnational best practice manuals were developed together with the project partners. From a thematic point of view, the topics of alpine farming and groundwater protection, beaver conflict management for flood prevention, preventive measures for erosion protection (optimization of crop species), control of invasive plant species, as well as awareness-raising measures on the topics mentioned were relevant for our house.

At the regional level, there was close cooperation with the forestry service for torrent and avalanche control, the building district management, the state of Styria (hydraulic engineering, resources and sustainability department), the Chamber of Agriculture, the Styrian Nature Conservation Association, the municipalities and schools of the Liezen district, the Apodemus engineering office and the land users. They also took part in stakeholder workshops.

At the final conference, the memorandum of understanding for further cooperation on flood and water protection was signed.
