    Management organic pig

The project focuses on the redesign of organic farrowing crates. Common organic farrowing pens are often larger than required by the EU organic regulation (10 m²). This also increases costs. In the project, a bio-friendly farrowing pen is being designed, which is intended to create clearer conditions in the pen by better separating the functional areas than before.

The different temperature requirements of newborn piglets and mother sows require a consistent separation of the sow's lying area from the piglet's lying area. The feeding area of the sow causes the surrounding area to be more or less contaminated with feed/water and represents a hygiene risk for piglets.

These reasons lead to the idea of separating functional areas more structurally. The so-called “sum rule” is also implemented with the Wels farrowing pen. This enables organic farms, under certain conditions, to design the size of stables and exercise areas more flexibly than the EU organic regulation stipulates.
