Assessment of the slip resistance of different rubber mat coverings

Assessment of skid resistance of different rubber floors in free stall barns

Many products for rubberized walking areas in stables, especially outdoors, are not sufficiently slip-resistant, which can lead to dangerous situations for the animals. This can even lead to the loss of animals. It is therefore important to find an optimal solution for non-slip floor coverings for a wide variety of stable systems in order to ensure the animals' sure-footedness.

    Aim of the experiment:

    • Testing a new type of mat from Kraiburg

    • Ensuring that dairy cows are sure-footed

    • Use different measurement methods

    • Comparisons between the previous rubber mat and the new surface

    • Information and advice for practice

In the cattle test barn at the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein, such dangerous situations were observed on the “KURA-P” rubber mats from the Kraiburg company that had previously been laid. For this reason, a new product, the “profiKURA-P” rubber mat from the same company, which has an opti-grip surface, was installed on half of the tread.

Using three different measurement methods (slide length measurement, step length measurement and sliding friction measurement), which were carried out on both types of mats, these could be compared and the advantages of the newer rubber mat “profiKURA-P” could be made clear.
