Assessment of skid resistance of different rubber floors in free stall barns

Many products for rubberized walkways in barns, especially outdoors, are not sufficiently slip-resistant, which can lead to dangerous situations for the animals. This can even result in animals escaping. Therefore, it is essential to find the optimal slip-resistant flooring solution for the various barn systems to ensure the animals' sure footing.

The aim of the experiment:

• Testing a new type of mat from the company Kraiburg

• Ensuring the sure footing of dairy cows

• Use different measurement methods

• Comparisons between the previous rubber mat and the new covering

• Information and advice for practical application

Dangerous situations were observed in the cattle research barn at the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein on the previously installed "KURA-P" rubber mats from the company Kraiburg. For this reason, a new product, the "profiKURA-P" rubber mat from the same company, which features an opti-Grip surface, was installed on half of the walking area.

Using three different measurement methods (slip length measurement, step length measurement and sliding friction measurement), which were carried out on both types of mats, it was possible to compare them and to demonstrate the advantages of the newer rubber mat “profiKURA-P”.
