    Management organic pig

At the Wels-Thalheim site, around 30 breeding sows are housed under organic farming conditions to provide piglets for research purposes. Both free farrowing and group suckling are practiced. The stables were converted in accordance with the requirements of EU Regulation (EEC) No. 2092/91.

The focus is on piglet production for feeding trials. At the same time, it is also important to make the area for pregnant sows and piglet-carrying sows accessible for experimental operations. To ensure these goals, strict management regarding hygiene, reproduction, feeding and husbandry is necessary.

The testing opportunities in Wels are of great value for the organic pig industry in Austria. Exact tests and practical observations lead to the further development of organic pig farming.
