Raumberger at the Youth Chess Olympiad

Over 800 chess players on the 2 days of competition mean an absolute record number of participants in Gratwein. Apparently many young people used the numerous offers on the Internet to learn chess during the difficult Corona period. Since autumn, chess has been played very frequently in our boarding school again and Erwin Schinnerl supports the new interest in chess and the numerous chess newcomers with tips and “material”.

At the individual competition on Wednesday, February 15th, Valerie Buchegger, Christina Reschreiter, Marie Tuttner, Leo Berger, Jakob Hassler and Georg Planitzer (all 1U) were reinforced by Paul Baier and Bastian Steinegger from the 2U.

Although many only learned chess a few months ago, all of them were able to win several competitions. Of course, in the previous training evenings with Werner Michor we were only able to get to know the most important details of the competition, but these initial successes are encouraging. In the team competition on Thursday, 4 Raumbergers each formed a team and Jakob Hernach, Alexander Lubensky (1U) and Fabian Perchtold (2ALG) complemented the 5 participants from the previous day! There were also numerous successes on the second day of the tournament, but of course the learning curve always had to be paid due to a lack of experience. The good atmosphere and the unbroken enthusiasm for chess give hope for the future and perhaps there will be another free chess subject where people can work on their chess skills and enjoy the sport of chess!
