Expansion and expansion of the long-term storage facility for seeds of grasses and small-grain legumes

The existing seeds at the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein are currently in cold storage with a temperature of 4 °C and a humidity of approx. 50%. These conditions allow storage with sufficient vitality for up to 20 years.

Since most of the collections and reproductions date back around 15 years, it is essential to transfer the material with a simultaneous detailed description in accordance with international guidelines. The objectives are in line with those of the Global Plan of Action (approved unanimously by all FAO member countries at the 4th FAO Technical Conference in Leipzig in 1996): Conservation of plant genetic resources for agriculture for continued use.

    The receipt serves three components:

    1. plant breeding

    2. direct use or return to agriculture

    3. for scientific purposes.

Continued use means providing a reservoir of genetic resources for agriculture and breeding, but also enabling the further development of agriculture with a broad biological diversity of varieties and species in order to improve nutrition (in terms of yield, quality, resistance, adaptation to given conditions). or changing climate and environmental conditions, etc.). An important aspect of this is maintaining the stability of the ecosystem, of which agriculture is also a part.
