When kept on pasture, dairy cows have to go from the pasture to the stable and back again twice a day. It therefore makes sense to build animal-friendly driveways. The driveways should be able to be built cost-effectively and in a time-saving manner, last at least 10-20 years without major effort and open up as much pasture as possible.
Dry and soft track designs are ideal for cattle. If animals have to walk over muddy paths, the risk of hoof and udder diseases and the risk of feed contamination increases, which in turn can lead to an increased occurrence of diarrhea during or after periods of rain. A driveway display garden was built at the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein Organic Institute based on the recommendations of the AGFF information sheet on driveway design. This enables farmers to compare the different systems directly. Furthermore, their suitability for daily use can be tested using the test stoves at the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein Bio-Institute.
