Piglet castration under injection anesthesia - implementation and improvements

Organic farms and suppliers to the Hütthaler farm culture project have been obliged to castrate piglets under general anesthesia since 2018. Two studies were carried out by the Institute for Organic Agriculture in Thalheim/Wels: First, the practical implementation of injection anesthesia was examined on 14 organic farms.

Wound healing problems only occurred in 3% of the animals observed, anesthesia-related deaths hardly played a role and the cooperation with the veterinarian was rated as good to very good by 98% of the farmers. Across all farms, around 70% of all piglets observed had no or only minor defensive movements. In a second study, the effectiveness was significantly improved by adding an additional opioid (butorphanol).

The most important results of these studies were prepared as a TGD information sheet for veterinarians. This is sent by TGD Austria to all veterinarians and serves as the basis for piglet castration under anesthesia.
