Intensive or extensive - that is the question?

Within a few years, this study was able to show that plant populations in permanent grassland can change very quickly. The diverse grassland areas in mountain areas in particular show a rapid reaction to intensification of use.

In the on-farm field trial, it was shown under practical conditions that the species are weakened or promoted differently in the golden oat meadow stand, which is traditionally used three times. By intensifying the use of four uses, the crude protein and energy yield could be increased, but undesirable species such as the common panicle also appeared more frequently. To ensure that the plant population remains stable and productive in the long term during intensification, grass seeding that improves the population and is adapted to its use must be started at an early stage. English ryegrass and meadow bluegrass would be preferred here. However, before any intensification, the possibility and necessity must still be explored. In the sense of a graduated use of grassland on the organic farm, a coexistence of intensive and extensive needs to be implemented.
