Our time is currently going through a change that is characterized by various crises. Univ.Prof. Dipl.-Biol. Dr. In his closing speech, Klaus Hackländer (University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna) described these crises as an enormous challenge due to the rapid dynamics. Not only is the climate, biodiversity and the economy changing, hunting and society are also undergoing upheaval. We have megatrends, urban exodus, migration, increasing urbanization and alienation from nature. And the most difficult thing, and this became clear at the hunters' conference, is that the pace of this change is increasing rapidly.
The lectures on the first day dealt precisely with this change, referring to behavioral changes in wild animals, agriculture and the appearance of forests - now and in the future.
Special challenges were discussed - hunters have to constantly show attention and adapt to the new difficulties. Developments that happen must be recorded and communicated - within the hunting community and beyond. It's important to talk about it - that's the only way you learn. Cooperation as a basis - this hunter conference also showed this - cross-border networking or, as Josef Zandl (Pinzgauer Jägerschaft, Hegeschau platform) said: “Do good and talk about it”.
But speaking means also communicating with those with whom it is not always easy to talk. The President of Jagd Österreich Josef Pröll said this impressively in his opening statement: “The others are not always the bad guys, but the others may also be an opportunity!” And the hunters are not the vast majority in society.
Another topic block dealt with pandemics, diseases and the tasks that hunters have to solve as a result.
On the one hand, the focus is on “ hunting ”, but on the other hand, the hunters face a huge number of challenges - combined with tasks that were not originally on their wish list. They are called upon to monitor diseases, save the forest and be pest controllers. This means that the gap between motivation and tasks is getting wider and wider. Dr. Klaus Hackländer said that anticipating, absorbing, communicating and cooperating are very important in this context and that appropriate knowledge is also required.
The task of the state hunting associations in the future will continue to be to invest in training and further education. This is becoming increasingly important, hunters need to be up to date in order to be experts in wildlife habitat, in producing high-quality food or in the fight against new epidemics.
The summary of Dr. Klaus Hackländer ended with his wishes to the hunters, the state hunting associations and everyone involved in hunting to communicate the many good things that are happening and being done in order to maintain the image of hunting.
Good sight everyone!
