The vegetation stage has a decisive influence on the feed value of grassland feed.
The present experiment is intended to demonstrate the influence of different frequencies of use of the grassland (2, 3 or 4 cuts per year) on the feed value in vivo. In addition, feed intake (edibility) is recorded.

What is new compared to numerous so-called usage trials is that not only the aspect of digestibility (in vivo) is examined, but also feed intake (edibility) is also recorded. The effect of feed intake on the possible stocking density has a decisive influence on the result per unit area and thus considerably expands the interpretation horizon of the experiment.

The experiment is intended to provide practical decision-making aids and advice as to when the grassland should be optimally harvested. Quantity and quality play a role, and when assessing the optimal cutting time, the concentrate level, the desired performance and the lactation stage must also be taken into account.

The experiment was carried out over a period of six years (1999 - 2004) on three different permanent grassland locations in order to take annual and location influences into account. The different locations record different types of soil and plant communities, which can react differently to fertilization and usage intensity. The three experimental locations are located in the surroundings of the Raumberg-Gumpenstein LFZ, but differ in terms of exposure, soil type, soil type, depth and plant community. This means that the tests are more meaningful and the results can be applied to a broader area.
