From preliminary work at the institute it is known that flat peas in heat-treated form can be used in rearing piglets in up to 20% of the total ration without any problems. The aim of the present project is, on the one hand, to research whether a further increase in the proportion of flat peas in the ration is possible in order to replace soy cake in the ration and, on the other hand, to examine the possible usability of sainfoin seeds. Sainfoin is already used as a green plant or in dried form in ruminants, but the use of the seeds in monogastric animals has not yet been tested.
The following questions should be addressed in the research project:
- How high is the protein content in the fruits examined and what proportion of the ration can the fruits examined take up?
- How much do ANF (antinutritive factors), seed coats or other secondary ingredients influence the intake and growth of rearing piglets
- Gathering empirical knowledge about the fruits examined regarding cultivation, harvesting, storage, and preparation for feeding
