Our goals:
- Preservation of the natural area as a basis for life
- Better understand the interaction between people, the environment and nature
- Recognizing long-term developments as a basis for decision-making for a sustainable regional policy
- Collaboration between research institutions within and outside the region
- Involvement of the regional population in finding topics and research work
- Provision of existing knowledge from the region, for the region
- Implementation of sustainable projects, also in collaboration with educational institutions
- Regular meetings for the development and expansion of the platform
Our subject areas:
Biodiversity, forest, water, agriculture, nature conservation, climate change, material cycles, rural living, economic and cultural areas
Research space and partners:
The Eisenwurzen research platform with a size of 5,904 km² extends over 91 municipalities in the federal states of Upper Austria, Lower Austria and Styria. The research area includes both the economic axes around the central Linz area, as well as protected areas such as the Gesäuse and Kalkalpen national parks, the Rothwald jungle, the Dürrenstein wilderness area and the Eisenwurzen nature park, the experimental area of the Federal Environment Agency at Zöbelboden, the Higher Federal Teaching and Research Institute for Agriculture Raumberg-Gumpenstein , the Hochschwab area (GLORIA) and the Lunz water cluster. Other partner institutions include regional management, the Upper Austrian Eisenstraße, the Ennstal Technology and Service Center, the Study Center for International Analyzes (STUDIA), and much more
The platform is open to new, interested members.
Regional issues:
The Eisenwurzen is one of the best-researched regions in Austria and Europe. The close collaboration between researchers and the regional population results in a variety of questions that are addressed in projects.
- How will climate change affect the Eisenwurzen region in the long term (vegetation, natural events, tourism, agriculture, population, economy)?
- How does structural change in agriculture affect society and nature?
- How can the challenges posed by changing population structure in rural areas be met?
- What basis do the topics of nature conservation, natural regions, national parks, biodiversity offer for economic activity?
International level:
The Eisenwurzen research platform is a showcase model of the 32 LTSER platforms in the European long-term research network. Participation in international projects has become possible thanks to the region's good networking.
